This paper is a progress report on our work on social security in Germany which is funded by Freistaat Sachsen, Hamburg Institute of International Economics and the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg.
By use of the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) the implications of a change from the present pay-as-you-go system (PAYG) to a base pension scheme (BASE) which is augmented by individual savings are analyzed in a microdata approach. This is done by determining individual entitlements which are then aggregated into national totals. The central point of research is to determine the implications for the recipients if a base pension scheme is implemented in Germany.
